Newport woman arrested following shoplifting incident

Newport, Ark. -

A Newport woman was arrested for robbery and refusal to submit to arrest last week after returning home from the grocery store.

Athena Smith, 26, was accused of concealing merchandise inside of her purse while shopping at Kroger on Nov. 30.

According to an affidavit filed by Det. Patrick Weatherford of the Newport Police Department, the incident was reported to Reserve Officer Alan Gansz, who was performing off-duty employment at the business.

"Gansz began to watch Smith and observed that she had several items in her shopping cart and was walking throughout the store," Weatherford said. "Smith then went to the checkout lines and Gansz observed that now she only had three items, and items he had observed her pick up were no longer in her possession."

Weatherford said that the officer confronted the suspect as she left the store and advised her she was under arrest for the incident. After a failed attempt to stop the subject, Gansz retreated to the back of the vehicle to get the license plate number and Smith put the vehicle in reverse, "nearly striking him as she fled the scene."

Contact was made with Smith, who was sitting on a couch at a residence a few minutes later, by Sgt. Bill Childers. The suspect against refused to submit to arrest, jerking away and falling to the ground when the officer attempted to handcuff her.
Smith was taken into custody and transported to the Jackson County Detention Center where she was charged.
